I thought I would make a list of some small, local art galleries around town that have some interesting art on view as well as let everyone know where you can see some of my art this month.
I have been accepted into a group show at the Happenstance Café in Lawrenceville that will get hung on October 7. My painting, “Whirling” will be on display along with many other local artists’ work. Stop by for a coffee and check it out!
I have also been working on painting a window pane that will be auctioned off at Acrisure Stadium to raise money for Type 1 Diabetes on Sunday, October 19. My painting is of Hines Ward, and is painted in acrylics. The event is coordinated by Energy Swing Windows for Breakthrough T1D. Here is a link to an article in the Trib Live about it: Breakthrough T1D Article
NEARBY: Art shows at local galleries going on this week
Pandora 7 Full Circle – 903 Western Ave Pgh, PA 15233 This gallery and antiques store has a variety of contemporary art on display for sale. Josh Hoffman, a local plein air artist has a couple paintings for sale there.
Frechard Gallery in 5005 Penn Ave, Bloomfield has a show up with a couple other local artists that I know.
Ketchup City Creative is a little gallery in Sharpsburg. Their next exhibit is “City Love”
Boxheart Gallery – The Pittsburgh Group is their current exhibition.
Zynka Gallery – Patricia Bellan-Gillan has solo exhibition on view through October 27. She mixes personal narrative with fairytales.
Tomayko Foundation & Mason Gallery has two upcoming group exhibitions “Felt-Occurrence” and “Continuing a Legacy of Classical Painting: DuMond, Mason, and Sulkowski” with classical landscape works from October 3 – November 14.
And while the exhibition is not happening right in the Pittsburgh area, it’s related. The Pittsburgh Society of Artists have their 59th annual exhibition at the Oglebay Institute Stifel Fine Arts Center in Wheeling, WV. The Oglebay Institute Stifel Fine Arts Center is an elegant building with beautiful architecture and a nice layout for exhibitions. The show is non-themed, so there is a wide variety of art on display.
Tyler Gedman recently had a solo exhibition was from August 27 – Sept 17 called “As it Was” at the CCAC West Hall. I was very sad to not get over to see it, I had thought originally that it was at the CCAC in Boyce, where I could easily run over from home. But the Allegheny campus is on the North Side and I couldn’t get there after work.
Tyler is a landscape artist and the works in this collection are all painted “en plein air” which means they were painted outside on location where the scene was viewed. As he says on his website, “Each piece in this show is a record of a specific moment and place, unpolished and subject to change.” You can read more about Tyler Gedman on his website: www.tylergedman.com
FARAWAY: Shows elsewhere that I wish I could go see
There are some artists that I enjoy and follow who have some upcoming shows and a few who just had a recent show. I thought I might mention some of them, and share their wonderfulness with all of you!
Haven Gallery in Northport, NY – an upcoming show, “Reverie”, October 25 - November 23 that is curated by Beautiful Bizarre Magazine will have an exceptional selection of contemporary art that will include a painting by one of my favorite artists, Kayla Mehaffey. Here is her website, if you would like to see her art:

Teresa Oaxaca is an artist in Washington, D.C. Teresa Oaxaca is an eccentric artist that paints beautiful, colorful, almost collages of a subject, often with babies and flowers strewn on the canvas. She also paints birds and fish, along with still-life’s, such as cakes. She dresses in a renaissance style, in beautiful frilly dresses with lots of lace and petticoats. She recently painted in the L’Enfant Gallery front window for Art All Night Georgetown and has her work up in a pop-up exhibition titled, “Floating Worlds”. She has a painting in a group show of the DC, Maryland & Virginia artists group at the American University Museum at the Katzen Art Center in Washington D.C. from Sept. 6 - Dec. 7. Jivan Lee had a recent show, “Uplift” which was at Altamira Fine Art in Jackson Hole, WY. He said it was “A Love letter to the monsoon season” in his words. Jivan Lee is a landscape painter who uses bold colors to paint the Taos, New Mexico scenic countryside. He often paints waterways, gorges and mountains with big skies in wide palette knife strokes. He gives an artist talk on his Instagram page about the show that gives some back story to how he got started. He often paints storms, and he paints outside in the elements by putting up a tarp or tent at the back of his truck. Jivan Lee is active on Instagram where he videos himself at work in the field.
